Ten statements of fact about your own life. Check each one against a calendar, a ledger, a county record, or an attendance — not against how you feel about yourself. From inside your own ignorance, the positions feel identical; the facts do not.
Several will be true at once. That is normal. Take the lowest-numbered one that is unambiguously true, and do the one thing beside it this month. The order roughly tracks what has to clear first.
Over the last six months you have spent more hours reading about this than in the same room as people affected by it.
Why it isn't working
Reading has replaced relationship. The method you were taught for getting knowledge is the one that does not work here — and the harder you work by it, the further you get from the one that would help.
This month
Categorise the last six months of your calendar into hours of study and hours of non-transactional co-presence. Compute the ratio. Nobody else has to see it.
In the last twelve months there was a public event, a work day, or a general call for volunteers that you knew about and did not attend.
Why it isn't working
You are waiting at the wrong rung. The invitation you are waiting for already arrived, in a form you did not recognise as one. Restraint and absence are indistinguishable from outside.
This month
Find the next public event, work day, or general call within driving distance. Put it in the calendar. Go once, and take direction.
Something will not leave you alone, and you have not acted on it, because you cannot tell whether it is a leading or a good idea.
Why it isn't working
You are stuck at property zero. Every published account you have read was written backwards from a confirmed outcome; nobody publishes the eight months of not knowing. The only signal that shows up every time in the record is persistence through discouragement.
This month
Write down the prompting, the anticipated yield of comfort, and the anticipated yield of friction. Then ask whether you would still do it if no one outside the affected parties ever knew.
A body you belong to has declined a specific request on this within the last two years, without anyone obstructing it.
Why it isn't working
The body was neither ignorant nor obstinate. It discerned accurately about its own condition, and its condition was disconnection. A better presentation would have failed the same way.
This month
Write to your clerk and add a fourth query to the traditional three: how did this meeting come to hold this specific parcel of ground, and when?
You can describe what happened at an event that changed you, and you can tell that it did not transfer to the person you told.
Why it isn't working
You are holding knowledge carried by proximity over time and by nothing else. Nobody is keeping it from you, and nobody can hand it to you. This one stays open.
This month
Nothing is offered. Sit with it. The honest step is to stop looking for the shortcut.
There is someone a generation away from you who holds, or needs, something you have never asked for or offered.
Why it isn't working
Both ends are reading the other's silence as indifference. Neither has withdrawn. The considerateness is what produces the silence.
This month
Ask one person a generation away one specific question about something they did — or tell one person a generation away one specific thing you did. Not a general offer, and not a programme.
You raised this more than once, it made people defensive, you stopped — and you have never told anyone that is what happened.
Why it isn't working
You did not lose commitment. You tried more times than the people who never tried once, and repeated defensiveness teaches faster than any argument. Stopping was learning, and it is reversible on different terms.
This month
Tell one person you stopped. Not the meeting — one person. Say what happened, including that you never said so.
You know something is not being said in an institution you belong to, and you cannot say whether it was never known, kept back, or left unopened.
Why it isn't working
You are misrouting. Three kinds of silence look identical from outside and each calls for a different response — and the grammar you were raised on was built to hide the difference. Iowa was opened to settlement has no agent in it, and a sentence with no agent asks nothing of anyone.
This month
Run the conversion on one sentence from an institution you love. Name the agent, name the mechanism, put it in the present tense, identify the speaker.
You have been welcomed somewhere more than twice, and have never been given a task by the people who run it.
Why it isn't working
You have reclassified yourself from guest to participant without telling anyone. The difference is arithmetic, not manners: somebody has to meet you, task you, supervise you, answer you, feed you. If they did not choose that expenditure, you brought a cost and called it help.
This month
Ask the people who run the place you keep visiting what would actually be useful — and accept the answer if it is nothing this month.
You believe this is urgent, and you cannot name a date by which anything must happen.
Why it isn't working
Urgency without a date is indistinguishable from temperament. It has nowhere to land, and it converts into background dread that produces nothing — while a group that decides by waiting for unity has nothing to wait toward.
This month
Find one date. A real one, external, with a mechanism and a lead time. If you cannot find one, that is the finding — and it is more useful than another month of dread.
